*  Awan rendah ketinggiannya di bawah 2.000 m. Terdiri dari awan Nimbostratus dan awan Stratus. Awan stratus di sebut juga awan berlapis terbentuk saat massa udara hangat perlahan naik dan menyebar diatas massa udara dingin. Awan Nimbpstratus berwarna abu-abu dan mengindikasikan akan turun hujan.

*  Awan ketinggian sedang ketinggiannya antara 2.000 sampai 6.000 meter. Terdiri dari awan awan Altocumulus dan awan Altostratus. Awan Altocumulus berkepul-kepul, tidak rata dan berlapis, menandakan keadaan cuaca yang baik.

*  Awan tinggi ketinggiannya 6.000 meter keatas. Terdiri dari awan Cirrocumolus, Cirrus, Cumulonimbus dan Cirrostratus. Awan Cirrus tampak seperti helaian putih yang tipis seperti pita, awan Cirrus ini terbentuk di Troposfer pada ketinggian 11.000 meter dan terbuat dari kristal es yang dingin.
